один из старейших и крупнейших английских университетов. Основан в Кембридже в 1209. Постепенно чтение лекций стало приобретать всё более организованный характер. Уже в 13 в. в К. у. определились традиционные факультеты: гуманитарный, юридический, богословский и медицинский.

В 16 в. одним из попечителей университета был Т. Мор. С К. у. связана также деятельность Эразма Роттердамского. Несколько позднее университет стал центром Реформации в Англии, а в 17 в. - передовой науки того времени. Преподавание в университете строилось на основе индуктивного метода Ф. Бэкона, что привело к развитию в нём наряду с гуманитарными естественных наук. В 1669-1702 в К. у. состоял профессором И. Ньютон. В 1837 здесь получил степень магистра Ч. Дарвин. Выдающуюся роль в научной революции в физике, начавшейся на рубеже 20 в., сыграла Кавендишская лаборатория К. у., в которой работали Дж. К. Максвелл, П. Дирак, Дж. Томсон, Э. Резерфорд. Большой вклад в науку внесли Листеровский биохимический институт и Кембриджская обсерватория.

По своей организации К. у. до сих пор сохраняет много традиционных черт. Он по-прежнему состоит из Колледжей, представляющих собой самоуправляющиеся корпорации. В каждом колледже 300-400 студентов различных факультетов.

Имел факультеты: классический, богословский, английский, новых и средневековых языков, музыки, востока, экономики и политики, исторический, юридический, философский, инженерный, географии и геологии, математический, физико-химический, археологии и антропологии, 2 биологических факультета, медицинский, педагогический, инженерно-химический. При К. у. имеются центры африканских, международных, латиноамериканских, южно-азиатских исследований; институты - полярных исследований, теоретической астрономии, группа разведения и содержания домашних животных; школы - биологических и физических наук; музей Фицуильяма, музеи классической археологии, археологии и этнографии, зоологический, геологический, истории науки; обсерватория, ботанический сад, с.-х. станция и др. В 1971 в университете обучалось около 11 тыс. студентов; работало свыше 1000 преподавателей, в том числе около 150 профессоров. Библиотека университета насчитывала (1971) свыше 3 млн. тт.
